Many people don't fully understand what forgiveness is and how it can be for their own benefit. Most importantly, forgiveness is not excusing or forgetting what someone did. The goal is to get to a place where you no longer seek to pay the offender back. This doesn't mean you excuse the behavior, but you can stop that behavior from causing you further damage.
